Ancient Europe, B. The evidence for the various groups contributing to the development of the kingdom of Scotland is uneven, however, both in terms of historical sources and archaeological research. It is therefore necessary to consider the broadest possible range of information to reconstruct the period: The early medieval period in Scotland can be divided into three major phases. Limited evidence remains for the post-Roman phase c. The early historic or early Christian phase c. Then came the Viking phase ninth century through mid—eleventh century a. Their attacks were surely an important catalyst for the unification of the Dalriadic and Pictish kingdoms into Alba, the kingdom of Scotland. Unlike the situation with the Germanic territories beyond the Rhine frontier, little evidence suggests significant levels of trade across these walls, and so the withdrawal of Rome in the early fifth century was less obviously disruptive in Scotland than elsewhere. It is widely accepted, however, that the people between the walls were influenced significantly by the Roman military presence.

He proposed, “Evidence has been accumulating in many fields of investigation pointing to a notably warm climate in many parts of the world, that lasted a few centuries around c. Some “MWP” events are thus wet events or cold events rather than strictly warm events, particularly in central Antarctica , where climate patterns opposite to the North Atlantic area have been noticed. The settlement occupies a rock formation above the surrounding hills with its architecture neatly built into the landscape.

Bowling by Dagonell the Juggler In , British anthropologist Sir Flinders Petrie found a bowling ball and pins in a child’s grave in Egypt, dating back to BC, which would make the game of bowling over 5, years old. Monks would set up pins called kegels, which represented human sins or temptations. They would then throw stones at the pins, thus conquering sin. Kegling is another term for bowling, even today. There are records indicating that some variation of bowling has been played throughout history all over the world.

As a peasant’s game, absolutely nothing was standardized. The size, number, weight and arrangement of the targets varied wildly from village to village, as did the ball. The illustration below Bodleian Library, Oxford, Ms. Another variant of the game used a half-ball which was slid on its half side towards the pins.

The other is accidental existence, for example man is white, and this is existence secundum quid. In Thomist philosophy, the definition of a being is “that which is,” which is composed of two parts: In other words, a being is “an essence that exists. Substances are things which exist per se or in their own right. Accidents are qualities that apply to other things, such as shape or color: For instance, an animal can be said to be a being whose matter is its body, and whose soul [19] is its substantial form.

Share 82 shares ‘They are sites that we know of from the historical records but we’ve never before found traces as to why they were founded,’ said Stephen Kemp, senior archaeologist at the Environment Agency, according to IBTimes UK. The habitat is to compensate for rising sea levels and counterbalance man-made developments and flood defences on the Humber. Archaeological digs revealed traces of settlements that showed the land was more densely populated than records suggest ‘We can see through those the signs of a heavily occupied landscape that we’d previously suspected but not seen.

The settlement was found on higher ground because Romans had not developed the technology to drain away water, in order to live on the lower wetlands. But this technique was developed during the medieval period.

The Dating of Medieval English Private Charters of the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries by Michael Gervers In , F.M. Stenton published one of the most informative and concise introductions to .

Its publication now is not due to its completion, more to answer questions about my disagreement with many accepted dates of military masonry structures in the UK. This discussion is in no way supposed to be definitive, but it is intended to provoke thought, argument and, hopefully, comment. Thomas Much has been written about the dating of Medieval Military Architecture and many theories have grown up through the study of the so-called progression of building styles – from wood to stone – from square to octagonal to round.

In tandem with this these styles have been named from Norman to Early English to Transitional etc etc. Now after many years formulation and study these ‘standards’ have solidified and become accepted. It is therefore necessary to re-assess the evidence for the value of these procedures, and here I intend to show that these now require re-evaluation. We must first start by examining the evidence on which we are basing these theories.

Sunday, 25 October Norwegian medieval furniture: This is a portal of six Norwegian University Museums containing their huge collection of high quality photos of objects and research activities. It took some long evenings to sift through all these photos and save the interesting pieces of medieval furniture, tools and games. Another large quantity concerned runic inscriptions on wooden sticks, also not so interesting for me. Already in my previous post , a few photos of medieval planes from originating from this portal were shown.

Here I would like to show you the Norwegian medieval chairs and benches from this site. It will save you going through all these photos yourself, although I have shrunk the photos in size originally they were Mb each. Although these photos show nice pieces of furniture, almost no information on the furniture piece is given on the UNIMUS site.

It took some more nights to gather some additional information of these seats. I will show other pieces of Norwegian furniture in a following post.
